Project Description

St Andrews Residential Refurbishment

This project involves the full refurbishment, reconfiguration, and extension of an existing family home in St Andrews, creating a contemporary and highly functional home tailored to the needs of its owners. The design transforms the dated cellular internal layout into a bright, open, and flexible living environment while carefully respecting the scale and character of the surrounding residential neighbourhood.

The proposal reimagines the internal arrangement to better support modern family life. On the ground floor, walls are removed to open the kitchen into a generous new dining area, improving flow between living spaces and creating stronger visual and physical connections throughout the home.

The previously underutilised attic space now provides a spacious principal bedroom suite with ensuite bathroom facilities, including both bath and shower, alongside integrated storage. New rooflights positioned throughout the loft bring natural light deep into the upper-level rooms.

The house is enhanced through the addition of an enlarged boot room to form a practical utility entrance, together with the replacement of the detached garage incorporating secure storage with independent garden access. Contemporary materials such as vertical timber cladding and black aluminium-framed glazing provide a modern contrast to the original house, while remaining sympathetic to the surroundings.

Natural light and energy efficiency are central to the design approach. New rooflights, bifold doors, upgraded glazing, and carefully positioned openings improve daylight, ventilation, and the relationship between the house and garden. The result is a high-quality family home that combines modern living standards with sensitive architectural renewal, extending the life and usability of the existing property for many years to come.
