It’s been great to see our design for 65 Haymark

It’s been great to see our design for 65 Haymarket Terrace in Edinburgh develop on site. Strip out works have exposed the existing concrete waffle slab where the high level services are beginning to be installed. Exposing the soffit to the office space is a key part of our design and a fantastic feature of the existing building. In turn, it will crate generous floor to ceiling heights and minimise the number of new materials and associated embodied carbon as part of the refurbishment.

We’ve been utilising our additional office space in our new St. Andrews home for some modelmaking! We recently developed a proposed contextual model for a new build design proposal - as being captured in the Scottish sun by Laura.

Our first project working alongside our fantastic

Our first project working alongside our fantastic clients @fifehistoricbuildingstrust has started on site this week!

This project includes vital repairs to a duo of dilapidated and vastly overgrown stone outbuildings which were likely once part of the stables and drying green of a large estate house in Kirkcaldy. We can’t wait to bring these buildings back to life and give them the respectful repairs they so desperately need.

We are pleased to receive building warrant for our sustainability-driven project in St. Andrews which is located in a narrow terraced plot. The design for the seafront home includes an array of sustainable approaches, including a Ground Source Heat Pump and the UK’s first ‘zigzag’ (@zigzag_solar) solar cladding system, reflecting the drive of our highly ambitious clients to create something bold and unique.

Lastly, natural cork render was applied to the external chimney tower of the boiler house to enliven its facade while allowing for the texture of the brick to still be visible. This material is derived from the renewable bark of cork oak tress, which is harvested without harming trees. It also holds excellent thermal and acoustic properties which reduces energy consumption and minimises the reliance on non-renewable materials.

Materiality wise, we managed to reuse and recycle all the bricks that were removed from the building as part of the minor demolition works. Some bricks have been reused within the building to infill holes left by redundant services, or create new brick feature panels. The remaining bricks have been crushed and reused as part of the wider landscaping strategies across the gardens.

This approach minimises the need for new materials, negated the requirement for any bricks to be sent to landfill, and ultimately lessens the carbon impact of this element of the construction.

We've introduced a number of simple but effective

We've introduced a number of simple but effective approaches to improve the thermal performance and energy efficiency of the building.

High performing insulation was installed within the external walls and roof, reducing heating requirements. An underfloor heating system connected to an air source heat pump provides clean energy to more efficiently heat the space. The single glazed gable end has been replaced with lower-level double glazing and high level solid panels to provide solar shading and reduce overheating. Finally, the building is naturally ventilated through providing opening windows on opposing elevations.

By reusing the existing building, we significantly reduced the carbon that would have been required to build new. We've graphically represented what 11,000 kg CO2 eq looks like to better understand the sustainable approaches we have taken.

It is the equivalent to the carbon storage capacity of 499 mature trees.

Or the equivalent of 78,500km of driving.

Or 19 roundtrip flights from Edinburgh to Munich.

These figures outline the compelling impact of adaptive reuse as we move into a time where there is a greater need to repurpose buildings to extend their lifetime, not waste resources, and reduce their carbon footprint.

We're delighted to see the completion of our adaptive reuse project at St. Andrews Botanic Gardens.

Following the decommissioning of the gas boilers and subsequent greenhouses in the gardens, RKA were invited to pitch for the project of reusing the existing boiler house and adapting this into a new education space.

Earlier this year we shared our proposal for a two-storey residence in Pittenweem in which we are glad to announce planning has been approved for. The design is inserted within the stone shell of the existing workshop and responds to the traditional facade scale in a contemporary approach.
