Blog: The Electric Press Shortlisted for a BCO Award
We’re pleased to share that The Electric Press has been shortlisted for a British Council for Offices (BCO) Award, highlighting the successful reinvention of a historic building into a dynamic, modern workplace in Leeds.
Situated on Millennium Square, The Electric Press is a Grade II listed building with deep industrial roots. Formerly home to some of the city’s earliest electrically powered printing operations, the building has been thoughtfully adapted to reflect its heritage while supporting contemporary working environments.
The design approach focused on uncovering and enhancing original architectural features. Previous alterations were stripped back to reveal exposed brickwork, cast-iron detailing, and impressive ceiling heights once required for large printing machinery. These elements now define the character of the space, creating a strong connection between past and present.
A standout addition is the zinc-clad rooftop extension, which incorporates a shared clubroom and landscaped terrace. In a dense urban setting where outdoor space is limited, this new level offers occupants a place to collaborate, relax, and take in views across the city. Its lightweight, curved form provides a deliberate contrast to the building’s robust industrial base while remaining sensitive to its listed status.
Inside, an exposed services strategy enhances both the aesthetic and adaptability of the workspace. Improved ceiling heights and reinstated daylight routes have significantly increased natural light levels, contributing to a more open, comfortable, and productive environment.
Craftsmanship and storytelling are also central to the project. A newly commissioned public mural references the building’s print heritage, while bespoke neon installations nod to its pioneering electrical history, embedding cultural meaning into the fabric of the building.
The transformation of The Electric Press demonstrates how heritage assets can be successfully adapted for modern use, combining historic integrity with forward-thinking design. The result is a distinctive, flexible workspace that contributes once again to the civic and commercial life of Millennium Square.
Being recognised by the BCO reflects the collaborative effort behind the project and a shared dedication to delivering high-quality, future-ready workplaces. As the team prepares to attend the awards ceremony in Manchester on 6 May, anticipation is building to celebrate alongside peers across the industry.
