Project Description

Situated in the heart of Leeds within Millennium Square, this historic listed warehouse has been reimagined as contemporary office space while honouring its industrial past. Originally housing printing presses and noted as one of the first buildings in Leeds to be powered by electricity, the Electric Press is a landmark of the city’s progressive spirit.

RKA’s design approach was to celebrate and work with the building’s inherent character. Original architectural features – including high ceilings, exposed brickwork, cast iron columns, and a timber truss roof – have been retained and carefully integrated into the new interior. The resulting space offers a unique blend of heritage and modernity, creating a distinctive working environment with a strong sense of place.

To complement the internal transformation, a zinc-clad rooftop extension has been added to the eastern side of the building, housing a clubroom and terrace. This elevated space provides a peaceful retreat above the vibrant city. A large-scale mural by artist Ian Kirkpatrick forms a vivid backdrop, offering a contemporary reflection on the site’s history and its role within the evolving story of Leeds.

The completed Electric Press Leeds project stands as a celebration of adaptive reuse -blending the old with the new and breathing new life into one of the city’s most iconic industrial structures.
