A feasibility study looked at several options for sideways or upward extensions for this corner-site property in St. Andrews. The 1970s bungalow was limiting our clients’ growing family and a larger space for contemporary living was required. We recently took the opportunity to take some professional photographs of this project.

Congratulations to our very own Fergus and Enbiya on their recent graduation from the University of Strathclyde! They have both been with the practice since their part one year out in 2021/22 and continued to work part time while completing their degree. Both gained a Masters in Advanced Architectural Design and have since returned working with us full-time. We hope you'll join us in celebrating their success in what is a very challenging degree to achieve. A huge well done to both from everyone at RKA!

Two weeks ago we had a fantastic visit to review the Corten steel external stair being fabricated for our residential project in Cellardyke. The stair is fabricated from a 10mm steel plate to create the solid profiled stringer balustrade and has undergone its acceleration treatment to create the distinctive Corten patina.

Last week we attended the annual Dundee Institute

Last week we attended the annual Dundee Institute of Architects Award evening at the Apex Hotel in Dundee. We were very proud to be shortlisted for four projects across five different categories. It was great to see the quality of design that is being produced in the region. We would like to congratulate all winners and thank the @dundee_dia for a fantastic evening, see you again next year!

CAIRN GALLERY

The newly insulated roof structure helps to block the traffic noise and achieves the quiet tranquil space our clients desired. The serenity of the white walls was retained, assisting in the natural illumination of the gallery space. The warmth of the refurbished natural timber floor contrasts to the walls, making the space feel inviting for art enthusiasts to enjoy the exhibition.

CAIRN GALLERY

Whilst much of the original features were retained and uplifted, rooflights, an insulated roof structure, a bay window, and glazed doors were amongst the new items. The existing leaking rooflight in the main gallery was replaced with a new double glazed rooflight, the beams below had their cladding removed, were rubbed down and painted. In the smaller gallery a new rooflight was added which transforms this small space and offers a view to the beautiful tree outside.

CAIRN GALLERY

Professional photographs were recently taken for our project and wonderful clients @cairngallery. Formerly a stable for miniature ponies, this outbuilding in the coastal town of Pittenweem has recently served as a private art space, going by the name of Cairn Gallery. The renovation sought to enhance the many qualities the existing space holds. Our proposal includes simple and minimalistic design moves to achieve this.

EDEN VIEW

An existing fireplace was opened up to provide a visual link between the existing living room and new living space, plus a surprise find of an old window in what was originally the end wall of the house.

A new and bespoke vaulted ceiling abuts the original stonework which was exposed as part of the design. Crisp LED lighting ledges were installed along the length of the vaulted ceiling to illuminate the curved piece and make it a feature of the room alongside the exceptional views.

The design provides several simple interventions which entirely transform an underused space to maximise its potential. When we looked above the existing flat ceiling we saw an opportunity to gain height with a coved ceiling, including a gorgeously slim edged coved lighting detail.

EDEN VIEW

Final photographs have recently been taken of our Eden View project. The location of this project benefits from fantastic view across the River Eden and North Sea coastline – views which were bizarrely obscured because the only window looked in the other direction! We proposed a new corner window to maximise the view and added a window seat to allow our clients to really enjoy it.

The COP29 Summit has officially begun in Baku toda

The COP29 Summit has officially begun in Baku today to discuss tangible solutions to the global climate crisis and ensure that we do not let the target of ‘below 1.5 degrees’ slip out of reach.

Scotland’s target for net-zero emissions by 2045 will have a big impact on the construction industry that currently contributes to 39% of global carbon emissions.

At RKA we are pleased to see the increased standard for buildings especially a reduction in operation carbon costs and emphasis on clean energy uses. We see these standards as a base line and are always striving to surpass them where possible.

To celebrate these projects that go above and beyond for sustainability we have created an RKA project roundup of our sustainability award winners for 2024. The interior design was inspired by the Fife colours, the beach, the sea, the sky and to work with our client’s artwork and furniture collection. Rebecca from @thistle_and_wild painstakingly researched materials and colour swatches that worked with her concept and to create the strong colour choices throughout the house.

ANSTRUTHER SEA VIEW

The proposed layout enhancements plus a modest zinc dormer made it more suitable for modern living, keeping the building’s appearance while revealing its architectural value. An instance of this is the exposure of the masonry staircase to reveal the original historical character of the building.

A notable find during demolition was the original ground floor bread oven which we refurbished and illuminated for visibility. The timber ceiling in the living room was unsafe, so we collaborated with a structural engineer to retain most timbers, supported by steel flitch plates and shoes.

ANSTRUTHER SEA VIEW

Photos were taken of our refurbishment project of the Category B listed building in the Anstruther Conservation Area. The project aimed to restore its historical integrity while enhancing original features. We planned a careful renovation, including exposing hidden elements, reinstating traditional materials, and adding a modest rear roof extension.

Simpson and Brown Heritage Consultants (@simpsonandbrown) assessed the building's historic significance, noting its pre-18th century masonry and mid-18th century joinery. Despite some previous structural alterations, the property's overall significance within East Neuk of Fife remained intact.

One primary design move was to angle the ceiling of the extension to capture views over the lower buildings opposite and bring in as much natural daylight as possible. The pitched soffit is uniquely finished in brass and serves as a key design feature of the main dining space which opens out to an external decking area.

THE BRASS HOUSE

We recently got professional photographs taken of our design which transforms an existing house into a 3-storey family home. The design is better suited to modern living, including an open plan kitchen, dining, and living space on the ground floor. These ground floor spaces are subtly separated by a curved wall which houses a kitchen run and is offset from the ceiling to allude to one space. A small-scaled gymnasium is also located on the ground floor.
